UNH Health Insurance Requirement

  • All full-time degree students are required to have health insuranceÌýas a condition of enrollment:
    • to ensureÌýaccess to health care services beyond what is available on campus; andÌý
    • to provideÌýfinancial protection for significant illness or injury.
    • Students in entirely online programs are exempted from this requirement
  • Health insurance plans must be effective by September 1.
  • The requirement applies to students attending the Durham, Manchester, or Concord campuses.
  • Action must be taken each year; information does notÌýroll forward from year to year.
  • Students can be seen at Health & Wellness regardless of their insurance.
  • Students are enrolled in and charged for the UNH SHBP by default if they don’t submit a waiver by the semester deadline.

UNH Student Health Benefits Plan

  • The SHBP:
    • provides 12 months of coverage, beginningÌýSeptember 1Ìýand ending on August 31Ìýfor full-year, full-timeÌýstudents.
    • uses the Cigna Open Access Plus (OAP) network of providers.
    • provides both in-networkÌýand out-of-networkÌýcoverage.
  • CoverageÌýends in JanuaryÌýfor those graduating, notÌýreturning to UNH, or dropping to part-time in the spring semester.
  • Coverage may automatically end if student's full-time enrollment status changes.

  • The SHBP is cost effective, atÌýonly $190/month.
  • There is no deductible for in-network care;Ìý$350 deductible for out-of-network care.
  • Students can rely on this planÌýas their sole source of medical coverage.Ìý
  • The SHBP:
    • may save your family money if you are the only child on your family’s plan or you purchase a plan in the marketplace.
    • voluntarily complies with the Affordable Care Act’s requirements.

  • You will be billed for half the cost of the plan overÌýtwo semestersÌý($1,140 each semester).
  • The cost will appear on your UNH tuition/fee bills as a separate line item.
  • You can pay forÌýcoverage for dependentsÌýdirectly to Wellfleet InsuranceÌýon an annual basis.

Dental

The SHBP incorporates the to help enrollees save money on dental services.Ìý Because it’s a discount program, not insurance, there are no lifetime maximums, exclusions or claim forms.Ìý This link provides a list of dentists in the local area that participate in the program as well as their fee schedules for their services.

Vision

Enrollees in the UNH SHBP also have vision benefits through .Ìý This program provides savings on eyewear, contacts, eye exams and other services.Ìý Students can present their SHBP ID card and any applicable service or merchandise you receive will be discounted right at the point of purchase.Ìý There are no claim forms to complete and no waiting for reimbursement.Ìý

Waiving the UNH SHBP

Students will be automatically enrolled in the UNH SHBP if they do not submit a waiver.Ìý

Note:ÌýStudents on an F1/J1 Visa are required to enroll in the SHBP.Ìý

Students who wish toÌýÌýmust provide proof that their insurance:

  • is a United States-based insurance plan.
  • provides theÌýÌýspecified in the Affordable Care Act.
  • includes access to mental health care providers in the Durham, Manchester or Concord, NHÌýareas.
  • includes access to hospital and physician providers in the Durham, Manchester or Concord, NH, areas.
  • will remain in effect for the entire academic year (except for termination due to the attainment of a maximum age, or other situation resulting in a loss of plan eligibility*).
    • *Important! Students must notify Health & Wellness within 31 days of losing coverage.

Plans that cannot be used to satisfy the waiver criteria include:

  • Accident-only policies
  • Short-term limited duration health plans that does not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
  • Ministry sharing plans,Ìýeven ifÌýrecognized by the ACA
  • Medicaid or other government health insurance policies that do not include participating in-network healthcare providers in the Durham, Manchester or Concord, NH area
    • NH, MA,Ìý and ME MedicaidÌýcan be usedÌýto waive the UNH requirement.Ìý
  • Any other health benefits programs (e.g., a community care program) that are not recognized by the State of NH as being health insurance (or are not a health benefits plan governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974); and which doÌýnot meet all of the requirements specified above

All waiver forms will be audited to verify enrollment and benefits coverage.

Students who are found to be uninsured or to have insufficient insurance coverage:

  • will be enrolled in the SHBP as an Unqualified Late Enrollee.
  • will be charged the full cost of the plan. ItÌýwill not be prorated.
  • will have an effective date of coverage from the date the student is enrolled in the plan.

ÌýStudents who knowingly falsify their insurance information in order to appear to comply with the insurance requirement or who don’t obtain other coverage within 31 days after losing their original coverage are subject to charges for violation of the Student Code of Conduct.
