UNH held its annual Pride and Pancakes breakfast to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community Tuesday, April 8, honoring the recipients of this year’s Bill Kidder LGBTQIA+ Awards and welcoming Sandra Denoncour, executive director of the Joan G. Lovering Health Center, to deliver a keynote speech.
The celebration – formerly known as the LGBTQ+ and Ally Pancake Breakfast – was held in the Granite State Room in the MUB and was streamed online for additional virtual attendees. This year’s event marked the 32nd annual gathering.
UNH President Elizabeth Chilton welcomed the audience and kicked off the festivities with a message about the impact the celebration has had over the years.
“For more than three decades, this gathering has been a key example of allyship and affirmation for every member of our UNH community, and I am deeply grateful to be part of a community that promotes and supports dignity, connection and care,” Chilton said. “This event reminds us that values live not just in policy but in people, and how we show up for one another, especially in challenging times.”
Denoncour – who was a recipient of the Pink Triangle Award during her time at UNH – also spoke of the event’s legacy and the need to remain unified through challenging situations.
She reflected on the “spirit of the beautiful, strong, brave people who have come before us and who have shown us how to fight” and in addressing the increasing societal challenges spoke to the crowd gathered in the room and in the audience online in saying “I encourage you not to live in this moment alone.”
